Bicycle, Motorcycle, and ATV Activities and Accidents in the Summer

July 27, 2020
A father and mother ride bikes with their children. Each is wearing a helmet to avoid accidents.

While people naturally spend more time outdoors during the summer months, that is even more true this year during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are more cautious, not gathering in large groups in indoor spaces. Additionally, many places that once housed large crowds are not open. There are no fans in stadiums watching sports. There are no indoor concerts to attend. So, possibly more than any summer before Summer 2020, families are seeking outdoor recreation to have fun and keep kids occupied.

Bicycle, Motorcycle, and ATV Risks and Accidents

While there is much fun to be had in the great outdoors, it does not come without risk. Unfortunately, many accidents occur outside during what is supposed to be a fun outing. Bicycles, motorcycles, and ATVs are all outdoor modes of recreation that can become involved in dangerous accidents, leading to severe injury or death.

We are not trying to make you depressed in the middle of a beautiful summer day! We are just bringing awareness in the hope that you and your family will take the necessary precautions to remain safe while enjoying your outdoor activities.

The Helmet and Florida Law

When riding a bicycle, motorcycle, or ATV, we strongly urge you to wear your helmets to avoid life-threatening accidents! In case you are unfamiliar with Florida laws regarding helmets, we will share those mandates with you.

    • For bicycles, all riders under the age of 16 must wear a securely fastened helmet.
    • For motorcycles, all riders under 21 must wear a helmet. If you are over the age of 21, you can choose to ride without a helmet IF you can prove that you have insurance that has at least $10,000 medical coverage in the event of an accident.
    • For ATVs, all riders under the age of 16 must wear a helmet.

Again, we strongly urge you to wear a helmet, regardless of your age or insurance policy! No amount of money can compensate you for the loss of a loved one. We have said it previously, and it is worth repeating, your head will never win a fight with the asphalt or concrete!

Nance Cacciatore Law Can Help

If you or a loved one are the unfortunate victims of an accident while riding a bicycle, motorcycle, or ATV, we may be able to get you additional compensation. Sometimes an accident is just an accident. If you are on a dirt trail, hit a rock, and fly over the handlebars of your bike, there is nobody to blame. We can’t bring a lawsuit against that rock. However, there are many instances in which someone should be held liable. Sometimes it is even the manufacturer of the recreational vehicle that is responsible if there was a mechanical malfunction or defect.

If you were injured in a bicycle, motorcycle, or ATV accident, or have a loved one who was hurt or killed in such an accident, we urge you to give us a call at Nance Cacciatore Law. We do not want you suffering further with the burdened with mountains of medical bills or lost wages. Helmets are your first line of defense, but when all else fails, you are not alone. Nance Law is here to listen and help.
