Motorcycle Safety – Part 2

In a previous blog, we discussed safety practices that car drivers can implement to keep motorcyclists safe on the road. We talked about the importance of double and triple checking for motorcycles before pulling out, switching lanes, and making turns. We also advised drivers to be cognizant of their blind spots since smaller vehicles like motorcycles could be in these areas. This week we wanted to expand on the topic of motorcycle safety, but this time we have tips for motorcyclists.

At Nance Cacciatore, our Brevard County personal injury attorneys handle cases involving car accidents, motorcycle accidents, boating accidents, workplace injuries, wrongful deaths, and more. It’s our priority to assist the people of Brevard County, from Titusville to Palm Bay and beyond, with all things related to personal injury law. We also think it’s important to pass along information to help keep our community as safe as possible, which is why we want to talk about ways motorists can stay safe on the highways of Florida. If you drive a motorcycle, here are some safety tips that could save your life.

Wear Safety Gear

It’s no secret that helmets and other protective gear like body armor, elbow pads, knee pads, goggles, etc. can make all the difference in the event of an accident. According to the CDC, in 2016 helmets saved an estimated 1,859 lives and reduced the risk of head injury by 69%. There’s simply no good reason not to wear a helmet, so please do! Also – opt for a new helmet with a DOT sticker, which indicates it meets requirements set by Florida’s laws.

Wearing protective gear designed for motorcyclists can also prevent injury and drastically reduce road burn and broken bones if an accident occurs. There are plenty of options and styles, so you’re sure to find one that suits your needs. Opting for bright colors and reflective strips is also a good idea to make yourself as visible as possible.

Defensive Driving

Most motorcyclists know that driving a bike requires a lot more skill and attention than driving a car. It’s so important to be aware of your surroundings and plan for the worst, assuming a driver might not see you. Keep your headlights on during both the day and night for increased visibility. It’s also a great idea to take a motorcycle safety course to learn the best ways to stay safe on the road and promote the safety of other motorists.

Whether your vehicle has two wheels or more, we hope you remember to always use caution and follow the laws when you’re on the road.
