Driving Safety During the Holiday Season

by / Wednesday, 02 January 2019 / Published in Vehicle Accidents

During the holiday season, more people tend to be out and about than usual. You may notice that traffic is heavier during this time of year, which should come as no surprise! People are crowding the malls and department stores to get their Christmas shopping finished. There are also tons of holiday parties to attend, and many are also traveling to see friends and family. So, with all the hustle and bustle going on around you, we thought it would be a good idea to remind you of some safety measures to take while driving. We want you to have a wonderful and safe holiday season, so here are some great vehicle safety tips to help you do just that!

Buckle Up

This one is a no-brainer, but make sure you and your passengers ALWAYS have seatbelts on, even if you’re just going down the street. If you have children in your car, be sure they’re in child seats appropriate for their ages and sizes and that they are properly strapped in. Please remember a seatbelt that’s worn incorrectly won’t be able to do the job in the event that you get into an accident, so make sure everyone in the car has their belt fastened securely across their waists and across their chests. Another good reason to wear a seatbelt? Click it or ticket! Nobody wants a traffic ticket, especially during the holidays when there’s lots of shopping to do!

Stay Focused

It can be so easy to get distracted while driving, but it’s important to remain vigilant and avoid distractions of any kinds. That includes calling, texting, messing with the radio, doing makeup, eating, etc. It’s a good idea to turn your phone on silent while you’re driving to avoid the temptation of picking up a call. Also, be sure to watch out for other drivers that might be distracted. Even if you’re doing your part to drive safely, others around you might not be, so practice defensive driving as best as you can!

Don’t Drink and Drive

Again, this one is obvious, but it’s important and worth reiterating. Holiday parties and gatherings oftentimes involve alcohol, so if you are going to be drinking be sure to have a designated driver who will be sober or take advantage of a taxi service, Uber or Lyft. Even if you have one drink it’s best to err on the side of safety and avoid driving. You might not be over the legal BAC limit, but if you get pulled over or in an accident that one drink can turn into one major problem, so just don’t do it.
