The Dangers of Zantac: What You Need to Know about Your Health and Class-Action Lawsuits

July 14, 2020
A young female patient describes her symptoms to her doctor.

Zantac, your health, and lawsuits! That seems to cover a broad range of topics. Yet, we are talking about one all-encompassing concern.

Zantac Class-Action Lawsuits

Nance Law is taking part in Zantac lawsuits throughout Florida. If you have been a steady user of Zantac or know someone who is, then you should continue reading! And, even if you have never used this heartburn medication, it is good to stay informed about the safety and negative, lasting side effects of this medication in case your physician prescribes it.

Suffering from Heartburn

According to The Washington Post, heartburn, or acid indigestion, affects approximately 15 million people per day, and an estimated 60 million Americans experience it at least once per month. No wonder there are multiple medications on the market to address this health issue.

If you have never suffered from heartburn, then you may not realize how uncomfortable it can be for some, and why people would want to get rid of the awful pain as quickly as possible! While heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus, the symptoms can be severe enough to resemble a heart attack, which is both painful and frightening.

Zantac: Carcinogenic Heartburn Relief Medication

If you experience frequent heartburn, then you probably take some form of medication for it. In an attempt to treat heartburn, many people take Zantac or a generic medication containing ranitidine. Ranitidine often contains NDMA, which is likely carcinogenic and considered an environmental contaminant. NDMA is not listed as an ingredient because it was never meant to be one! In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed the presence of these potential cancer-causing chemicals.

Is this something you want to ingest? Many Americans have done just that without knowing it. Some stores have already pulled medications that contain ranitidine off the shelf, but not all have done so. That is why it is essential to read the ingredients on any heartburn (antacid) medication that you take, whether it is prescription or over-the-counter.

The Safer Option: Prilosec and Over-the-Counter Medications

If you suffer from heartburn, there are safer medications to take instead of Zantac. For example, Prilosec is a well-known heartburn medication. You can also take over-the-counter medications, such as Tums, Pepto Bismol, or Alka Seltzer, to find some relief from your heartburn symptoms. We, of course, suggest consulting a physician if you have more than occasional heartburn.

Cancer Risk and Diagnosis

If you or a loved one consistently took Zantac for six months or more and developed cancer, there is a possible link between the two. Especially if there is no history of cancer in your family, and the diagnosis is in your stomach, small intestine, esophagus, liver, or colon/rectum.

If this is your current situation and you are located in Melbourne, Florida, please give us a call immediately at Nance Law. It is not your fault that you have unwittingly ingested a probable carcinogen. You did not know the ingredients were harmful to your health, such as smoking. You just tried to treat your heartburn symptoms, like millions of people do in America every day. We want to fight for you, so please get in touch with us today. You are not alone!
