Zantac Does More Harm Than Good

September 15, 2020
Female patient at the doctor appointment refuses to take prescribed Zantac medication, believes that it causes harm to her body

When your physician prescribes medication or suggests an over-the-counter medication to buy, you trust him. It rarely, if ever, crosses your mind that the medicine may do you more harm than good. After all, the purpose of medications is to help you feel better. Why would you assume they would have the opposite effect?

What is Zantac?

Zantac is the name brand of medication often prescribed or recommended by doctors to help treat the symptoms of acid reflux and ulcers. The medical name for this medication is ranitidine. These types of medicines are often referred to as antacids. You may be familiar with antacid brands such as Tums, Rolaids, and Mylanta.

What is the Problem with Zantac?

You may have seen or heard commercials on the television and radio, urging frequent users to join the lawsuits against Zantac. But you may not know what the claim is about or if it pertains to you. At Nance Cacciatore, we feel this is information for you to know.

The problem with Zantac is that it contains NDMA, which is a possible carcinogen. In other words, it may cause cancer. Many things in our world cause cancer. For example, if you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, it stands to reason that you may develop lung cancer. However, cigarettes are not a medication recommended by your doctor. Zantac was prescribed and recommended for years to help patients with acid reflux and ulcers. In return, some of these regular Zantac users may have cancer.

NDMA, the harmful component found in Zantac, is used to induce cancer in rats in laboratory tests. We can’t imagine anyone would voluntarily take medication that is used for such a purpose! If someone told you that the iced tea you drink causes cancer in laboratory tests, you would switch brands of tea! Years ago, NDMA was even a component in rocket fuel. Yet, it is an ingredient used in a medication intended for people! The patients taking Zantac had no idea that it contained this harmful component in levels that could be catastrophically dangerous to their health.
